QLE overview

Updated over a year ago

Certain life events are considered Qualifying Life Events (QLEs), allowing employees to make changes to their employer-sponsored plan coverage. Individual health insurance carriers follow similar guidelines for QLEs, which enable individuals to sign up for a new health plan outside of the Open Enrollment period or make changes to an existing plan.

Common Qualifying Life Events:

  • Getting married.

  • Having a baby, adopting a child, or placing a child for adoption or foster care.

  • Losing other health coverage (e.g., employer-sponsored insurance).

  • Moving to a new home in a different zip code or county.

  • Changes in household size or income.

  • Turning 26 and aging out of a parent's plan.
